The EPA is requiring all contractors to be registered for an approved course to avoid huge penalty and fines!!
A new law by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates that all renovation, repair and painting contractors who disturb a painted surface in a home, school, daycare, church, etc... be EPA certified in lead-safe work practices. Contractors are required to take a one-day training course and firms must send in a short application to the EPA. If not, they could face TENS OF THOUSANDS in fines.
New research shows that contractors like:
Plumbers
Electricians
Painters
Siding contractors
Window installers
Drywallers
Home renovators
Kitchen installers
Roofers
HVAC contractors
Flooring installers
And many many more
can inadvertently expose children to dangerous levels of lead from invisible dust created during the jobs they perform on a daily basis.
Individuals must take a one-day (8hr) course from an EPA accredited training provider (Midwest Training and Environmental Services) to become a "Certified Renovator". Firms must register and pay a fee to the EPA. Both individual certification and firm certification will be good for 5 years at which time they will need to be renewed.
Mindful of the small added costs that may result from complying with this rule, the EPA is launching a consumer campaign designed to raise awareness of the dangers of lead poisoning, and encourage consumers to only use contractors that are Lead-Safe Certified.
Look to the left of this page and click on your State and look for classes in your location. If you do not see any classes in your area, please contact us by email or telephone at 1-616-837-0000 so we can bring the training to you.
In this course, you will learn how to educate the owners/occupants of the project using the "Renovate Right" pamphlet. You will learn how to determine if the renovation or repairs will be disturbing lead based paint by using the EPA approved chemical spot test. You will also learn how work safely and contain the work area when working with lead based paint. Upon completion of the work you will learn to check the work area by using the cleaning verification card, which is provided for you upon completion of the course.
